One of the four alternative weeklies we get for free on Thursdays over here heart of downtown Montreal, "Voir" (in French) reviews a new book on Zappa (also in French) in page 46 of today's issue: Frank Zappa, par Guy Darol, Editions Tryptique, 1997, 158p. The reviewer, Laurent Saulnier, thinks that: - a book on a musician has to have two aims: 1) reveal both the life and work of the musician; 2) make the reader eager to listen to the musician; - Darol's book doesn't reach any of the two aforementioned aims; - it's not really a Zappa biography; its' more like an essay on zappa; - usually the star spot is stollen to the musician by the author himself; - the book is written in an intello style that makes Zappa's work as out of reach as the book itself; it is as if the book is conceived such that you have to belong to a sect, to a secret and elitist club, in order to really appreciate Zappa's music. - the book is written in a style that lacks an incentive: "we look for the agreement, a pacified understanding, the trade with but-money-leaking hearts. Finally, the planetary ataraxia" (translation attempted by myself, E.A.) - the book makes of Zappa a gigantic statue such that he also becomes dearly out of reach, so that we forget that Zappa wrote some nice, both pop and undermining songs, for we are shown only the escarped trails; - the book also contains: a chronological biography, a quasi-complete discography, a well documented filmography, a bibliography surely more interesting than the book itself, and a lst of Internet sites "to do the work that this book will never accomplish" (translation attempted by myself, E.A.). I, for one, understand that the author is not a Quebecer, but a French, and am looking forward to hearing opinions of European, or any already-readers of this book, contributors to this newsgroup. Frank Zappa, de Guy Darol ---------------------------------------------- Lorsqu'on ecrit un livre sur un musicien, on devrait, d'apres moi, se donner deux missions: faire connaitre la vie et l'oeuvre de celui-ci et donner envie de l'ecouter. Le Frank Zappa de Guy Darol n'atteint aucun de ces deux objectifs. D'abord parce qu'il ne s'agit vraiment pas d'une biographie, mais bien d'un essai sur Zappa, or le musicien americain se fait regulierement voler la vedette par un personnage tellement moins interessant que lui: l'auteur du livre. On se fout de la facon dont Darol a entree ses amis dans le culte zappatiste. On aimerait simplement savoir ce qui vaut cette reelle passion. D'autre part, cet auteur francais est vachement intellectuel et rend l'oeuvre de Zappa aussi inabordable que son livre, concu comme s'il fallait appartenir a une secte, a un club aussi secret que select, pour bien apprecier la musique du createur de Lather, mais egalement, plus familierement, de Dancin' Fool ou Don't Eat the Yellow Snow. Ecrit de facon fort peu invitante ("... nous recherchions l'accord, une etreinte pacifiee, le commerce des coeurs mais demonetises. L'ataraxie enfin, planetaire."), le bouquin fait de Zappa une statue tellement gigantesque qu'il devient carrement inatteignable, qu'on oublie meme que Zappa a ecrit quelques superbes chansons aussi pop que subversives, pour n'en montrer que les flancs les plus escarpes. Reste une biographie chronologique, une discographie assez complete, une filmographie bien fournie, une bibliographie surement plus interessante que ce livre, et une liste de sites Internet pour faire le travail que ce livre n'accomplira jamais. (c) Voir (Quebec, Canada) 'Voir' article english translation When we write a book about a musician, we should in my opinion have 2 goals in mind: tell the life story and works of the musician, and turn people on to the musician's music. This book fails to deliver on both counts. This is the case because the book isn't a real biography,. but rather an essay about Zappa. In fact, in the book the American musician is regularly upstaged by an individual who is so much more boring than Zappa: the author, Darol. We could care aless about the way Darol managed to get his friends into FZ' s music "cult". We would simply like to know where the passion for FZ's music stems from. On another point, this French author (from France) is rabidly intellectial, and manages to make Zappa 's music as incomprehensible as his own book, as if one needed to belong to a fanatical organization , or to a secret and select society to appreciate properly the music of the man who created Lather equally, and more familiarly, Dancin Fool or DETYS. Written in a poorly inviting way [...] the books renders an image (statue of or icon) of Zappa so gigantic that Zappa becomes unfathomable, so that we forget that Zappa also wrote some superb songs, but also some subversive ones too, but focuses chiefly in showcasing Zappa's songs that were the most rabidly critical of the world. The book contains a time line of Zappa, a quite complete discography, a cinematography well supplied, a biography surely more interesting than the book itself, and a list of Internet sites to enable the reader to gather the important details that this books fails to deliver. 158 pages. "ZAPPA: UN INTELLO CHEZ LES ROCKERS" ------------------------------------- Arborant une coupe de cheveux hidieuse et une certaine ressemblance avec Dartagnan, le compositeur et guitariste de genie que se targuait d'ecrire des oeuvres musicales au potential "non commercial" n'a eu de cesse durante ses trente annees de carriere de denoncer avec grand bruit l'Amerique de la censure, du puritanisme, de la mediocrite et de l'immobilisme. Anticonformiste dans l'ame, revolutionnaire dans sa musique, il pouvait aussi bien sodomiser sur scene une bouteille en plastique a l'aide d'un manche a balai, ou commemorer avec grandiloquence le centieme anniversaire de la naissance du compositeur Edgar Varese en dirigeant Ionization et Integrales au San Francisco War Memorial Opera House. En d'autres activites traumatisantes, on l'a egalment vu jouer le role d'un proxenete dans un episode de la serie televisive Miami Vice, alors, qu'en 1984 Pierre Boulez lui rendait hommage en dirigent trois de ses oeuvres - The Perfect Stranger, Naval Aviation in Art? et Dupree's Paradise - a la tete de l'Ensemble Intercontemporain au Theatre de la Ville, a Paris. Comment comprendre ou situer le personnage, qui au debut des annees 90 consultait des professionnels de la politique afin de garantir son election a la presidence des Etats-Unis, commentait sur une chaine culturelle francaise un documentaire sur John Cage avant d'etre inhume a Laurel Canyon "dans le plus absolu anonymat" en decembre 1993? "Franc-tireur contre les bien-pensats, il secouait les colonnes du temple, il decullottait les bigots, glorifiait la cramouille et le prosinard, le chibre et les roubignoles. Bref, il devergondait les moeurs et deboussolait le marche, explique Guy Darol, auteur d'un petit ouvrage lyrique qui rend un hommage exacerbe a la deite Zappa. Entre la recit syncope' de sa vie, de sa carriere et de son militantisme - voir la "Zappalogie" 'a la fin du livre pour le detail des dates et des lieux - Darol raconte sa propre experience zappaienne, a commencer par la genese de son amour fou pour l'artiste et les grands bonheurs de son existence zappaiste. Passionne par son sujet, il n'a de cesse de nous decrire les nombreuses qualites de Zappa, sa philosophie, ses methodes de travail, et surtout la maniere dont il a donne un sens a sa vie. Lui, Darol. Ecrit avec une certaine derision, dans un langage qui emprunte au discours intellectuel et a l'humour franchouillard, cette biographie au sens large du terme propose une annexe comprenant une discographie, une filmographie, une bibiographie et meme l'adresse des Fils de l'Invention, une association parisenne qui appele "a une diffusion maximale" de l'oeuvre de Zappa.
