From: Michael Gray. Mother!
It was also for (Art Laboe's) Original Sound label that Zappa, with Ray Collins- later a Mother of Invention- had written and produced the reputedly beautiful 'Memories Of El Monte' by The Penguins. It features lead singer Cleve Duncan of the original Penguins (their big hit was the original of 'Earth Angel') but for 'Memories Of El Monte', Zappa told Mick Watts, 'the rest of those Penguins were just a bunch of guys from the car wash'.
From: "Stephen C. Propes" <spropes@loop.com>
In this case, the Penguins were the Viceroys.
Original Sound's Paul Politi noted, Art Laboe "would take Cleve and put the Viceroys behind them," causing some to incorrectly assume this was a pseudonym for the Penguins. With Cleve Duncan singing lead and doing the talking part, they next recorded as the Penguins on the anthemic "Memories Of El Monte" (Original Sound 27) in 1963. That song's writer "Frank Zappa was a young kid, hanging around the studio, (always) trying to sell songs."

I'm all alone
Feeling so blue
Thinking about you
And the love we once knew
And each time I do

Remember the dance
I held you so tight
The Satins were singing
In the still of the night
IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT
The 5 Satins

In the still of the night
I held you held you tight
Cause I really love you
Promise I'll never let you go
In the still of the night

I remember that night in May
The stars were bright above
I'll hope and I'll pray
To keep your precious love

Well before the dawn's light
Hold me again with all of your might
In the still of the night

I remember that night in May
The stars were bright above
I'll hope and I'll pray
To keep your precious love

Well before the dawn's light
Hold me again with all of your might
In the still of the night

You gave me your heart
And your love undying
Now I'm alone . . .
I'm sitting here crying

If only they have
Those dances again
I'd know where to find you
And all my old friends
The Shields would sing . . .
"
You cheated. You lied . . ."
YOU CHEATED
The Shields

You cheated, you lied,
You said that you love me
You cheated, you lied
You said that you want me
Oh, what can I do
but just keep on loving you?

Love is something you know nothing about
Love is somethng you can't throw about
So please try to love me
Love me like I love you

Oh, please try to love me
Love me like I love you

You cheated, you lied
You said that you want me
You cheated, you lied,
You said that you love me
Oh, what can I do?
Oh, what can I do?
Oh, what can I do?
From: Charles Ulrich <ulrich@sfu.ca>
The original 1973 arrangement of "Dickie's Such An Asshole" included a quote from "You Cheated". Napoleon sang,
They cheated, they lied,
They said they had my number, you know
They cheated, they lied,
They said they were gonna do this and the other (10/26/73 Austin)
  Or
He cheated, the man lied,
He said that he wanted me, you know
He cheated, he lied,
He said these are all the tapes, baby (11/11/73 Wayne)
This portion of the song was either edited out or not performed at the Roxy (YCDTOSA 3).

A THOUSAND MILES AWAY
The Heartbeats

You're a thousand miles away, but I still have your love
to remember you by....oh my darling...dry your eyes
Daddy's coming home soon
On my knees ev'ry day, all I do is pray
Baby, just for you...love you always, want you too
Daddy's coming home soon
It may be on a Sunday morning
It may be on a Tuesday afternoon
But no matter what the day is
I'm gonna make it my bus'ness to get home soon
Oh..you're a thousand miles away
But, I still have your love
To remember you by
Oh my darling...dry your eyes
Daddy's coming home...soon..

And the Medaillons with "The Letter" and . . ..
"
Sweet words of his mortality . . ."
From: Vladimir Sovetov
Dootone #347 - "The Letter" and "Buick 59"
But much most important thing that correct line is
I can whisper sweet words of pismotology in your ear
And speak to you of the pompitous of love..
Here is an enlightening excerpt from related story http://home.earthlink.net/~jaymar41/medallions.html
By Cecil Adams World's Smartest Human
What does the word "Pompatus" mean in Steve Miller's song "The Joker"?
  Dear Cecil:
What does "pompatus" mean? There's a movie out now called The Pompatus of Love, and of course it contains the Steve Miller song as a theme. I can't find "pompatus" in the dictionary. Any clues? --Cane95, via America Online
  Dear Cane:
Clues? Pfui. We have cracked the freaking case, thanks to some outstanding legwork by Jon Cryer--actor, cowriter, and coproducer of the movie Pompatus of Love--and my new assistant, J.K. Fabian. J.K. has what it takes to make a real impact in this business: brains, resourcefulness, and best of all an outstanding record collection.
"Pompatus" mystified millions when Steve Miller used it in his 1973 hit "The Joker": "Some people call me the space cowboy. / Yeah! Some call me the gangster of love. / Some people call me Maurice, / Cause I speak of the Pompatus of love."
  ...
Speculation about "pompatus" was a recurring motif in the script for the film The Pompatus of Love. Cryer himself had long wondered about it. While the movie was in postproduction someone told him about "The Letter."
During a TV interview Cryer said the song had been written and sung by a member of the Medallions named Vernon Green. Green, still very much alive, was dozing in front of the tube when the mention of his name caught his attention. He immediately contacted Cryer.
Green had never heard "The Joker." Cryer says that when he played it for Green "he laughed his ass off."
"You have to remember, I was a very lonely guy at the time," Green told Cryer. "I was only 14 years old, I had just run away from home, and I walked with crutches." The young man scraped by singing songs on the streets of Watts.
One song was "The Letter," Green's attempt to conjure up his dream woman. The mystery words, J.K. ascertained after talking with Green, were "puppetutes" and "pizmotality." (Green wasn't much for writing things down, so the spellings are approximate.)
"Pizmotality described words of such secrecy that they could only be spoken to the one you loved," Green told Cryer. And puppetutes? "A term I coined to mean a secret paper-doll fantasy figure [thus puppet], who would be my everything and bear my children." Not a real liberated concept, but look, it was 1954.

Heh! And could you believe dear friends that The Letter in Russian is Pismo. Yes, I'm laughing my ass off too.

The "sugar plum" phrase was used by Frank later in a song Dinah-Moe-Humm
From: "Stephen C. Propes" <spropes@loop.com>
According to label files, "Tick Tock" b/w "Cherry Pie" was "first session cut" Modern's Culver City studios in late August, 1954. Johnny (rn: Emory Perry) "wrote 'Tick Tock' on the way to the studio" to record "Cherry Pie". "I saw the clock at Union Station, thought 'tick, tock, tick, tock goes the clock...' Never did like to sing in the first place, I'd rather play my instrument. Marvin and I harmonized real well together on the horns, all I had to do was learn the words. Most of the time, groups would get together, want a horn player to fill in, if I wasn't doing anything, I'd send them somebody - Roy, Jimmy or Carl - or go myself. I taught a lot of people to read music, they would want me to do head arrangements for them.
And presumably the Turbans' "No No Cherry" (later covered by FZ) was a reply to "Cherry Pie".

"Nite owl was a name my 'mother" Nila had for me because I was always staying out late at night. I turned that phrase into a little song and recorded it on July 4, 1955, at Master Recorders in Hollywood, with The Chimes singing behind me, even though they were billed on the record as The Champs. The Chimes backed everybody on Specialty. They were Charles Jackson, David Cobb, Pookie Whooten and John Talbert."
The labels for that record got mixed up at Al Levine's pressing plant. I know this because I was working there at the time."I" was supposed to be the A-side, but when jocks played "I," they heard "Nite Owl" instead, and liked it. By the time [Specialty owner] Art Rupe caught the error, "Nite Owl" was already a hit around town. I was pressing my own record at Levine's when Art called me up to say that it was a hit.
