From: Charles Ulrich forthcoming book Project/Object
This piece was a studio jam featuring FZ (lead guitar), Tony Duran (rhythm guitar), and Jim Gordon (drums) of the Grand Wazoo band, plus Jack Bruce (bass), formerly of Cream. The composition is credited to the three soloists: Zappa, Bruce, and Gordon. It was recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York City, in September, 1972. FZ later said that Bruce was "very difficult to play with" and "too busy". The Mothers performed "Apostrophe" in concert in 1974 and 1975.
The title of this instrumental comes from the lyrics of "Stink-Foot", wherein the dog proclaims that "The crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe."
